How to Treat Carpet Beetles

The first thing you need to do to treat carpet beetles is to vacuum the carpeting, baseboards, furniture, and curtains.  Pay particular attention to any cracks and crevices that may be in furniture or under the baseboards.  After vacuuming, dispose of the contents outside.  If you have a canister vacuum that needs to be emptied, do it outside and rinse out the canister with a garden hose, and then dry it with paper towels.

Wash fabrics and dry them on high heat.  This would include clothes, bedding, towels, or any other fabrics you can think of.  If you have a fabric that cannot be washed, just put it in the dryer on high heat for about 20 minutes.

Use soap and water to clean window sills, shelves, inside drawers, tables, and other furniture.

Now it is time to apply a pesticide.  I think about the best one you can use is NyGuard Plus.  NyGuard Plus is an aerosol that is very easy to apply.  Make sure you shake the can very well before use.  The product is supposed to come out as a fog, but if you do not shake the can sufficiently, it may come out as just a stream.  Remove the cap and point the can straight down at the carpet.  Apply the product about 2 to 3 feet above the floor in a sweeping motion to cover all areas of the floor.  I also recommend that you apply this product on window sills, shelving, drawers, on the floor around closet doors, upholstered furniture, and any place else where you are seeing activity.  Always wear a respirator, eye protection, and disposable rubber gloves when handling this product.  Also, make sure that children, pets, fish, and that sort of thing are not in the room while it is being treated.  Do not let them into the room until the product has dried.  After that it is safe for children to play on.  If NyGuard Plus is too expensive, then you can try using Talstar P.  I do not think it is quite as effective, but it should work.  If you go with Talstar P, then mix it in a 1-gallon garden sprayer.  Fill the sprayer about halfway with water, then add 1 ounce of product, and fill the sprayer up the rest of the way to make one gallon of solution.  Set the sprayer tip to make a fan spray and treat all the same areas that I previously described, except do not treat areas of upholstered furniture that will come in contact with people or pets.

After the pesticide dries, you need to apply D-Fense dust under all baseboards, inside outlets, between the outlet boxes and the drywall, around all pipe penetrations, and any other cracks or crevices that you can think of.  You should apply this with a handheld duster.

I recommend retreating with NyGuard Plus after 6 months.  If you use Talstar P, then I recommend that you retreat every 90 days for a year.

After the first treatment, put down sticky traps in areas where you have seen activity.  If you are still seeing carpet beetles in the traps after 2 weeks, then you need to retreat.  Continue monitoring this way for an entire year.  When the traps are no longer trapping any specimens, then you are most likely carpet beetle free.

Keep in mind that carpet beetles can come in from the outside through open windows, doors, or cracks and crevices around the building.  Therefore, you should do a perimeter treatment of your home every 60 days.  You do not need to do this in freezing weather.  I have a video on how to do that, and I will place a link below for it.
