How to Treat Stink Bugs

Like most pests, stink bugs are coming in through cracks and crevices around your house.  Therefore, the first thing you need to do is treat around your home with a good pesticide.  There are lots of them that are registered for stink bugs, but my favorite is bifenthrin.  These are products like Telstar P, Bifen IT, and Talak 7.9.  Bifenthrin products that have a concentration of 7.9, should be mixed 1 ounce per gallon of water.  To maintain control, you need to apply one of these products every 60 to 90 days.

You can apply these products with the tank sprayer or a 20-gallon hose-end sprayer.  If you are going to use a 20-gallon hose-end sprayer, then you must do it correctly.  I have a video on how to do that, and I'll replace a link in the description.  Using a 20-gallon hose-end sprayer makes the job go way faster than doing it with the tank sprayer.  The only problem is that it can make a bit of a mess on the window glass.  To avoid this, you can treat most of the house with the 20-gallon hose-end sprayer, and just use a 1-gallon pump up garden sprayer to treat around the windows.  If you are going to do the entire job with a tank sprayer, then I recommend that you get a good battery operated sprayer that puts out at least 100 PSI.  There are lots of them on Amazon.  If you are going to use a 20-gallon hose and sprayer, then I also recommend that you purchase one of those expandable hoses that you see on TV all the time.  If you get one that's 100 feet long, it will make the job go much quicker and easier.  I also recommend getting a quick connect fitting to put on the sprayer and the garden hose. This will make refilling the sprayer much easier.

Regardless of whether you use a tank sprayer or a 20-gallon hose-end sprayer, the treatment is the same.  Spray up the side of the house three or four feet, and on the ground from the house out about another three or four feet.  Make sure that you get enough pesticide on the ground so that it reaches the soil.  I always like to soak the area really well where the ground contacts the house.  You should also treat around all windows, doors, pipe penetrations, around the electric meters, and any other place where bugs can enter the house.

Always wear personal protective equipment when doing this treatment and keep kids and pets off the treated area until it's dry.  Protective equipment should include eye protection, a respirator, rubber gloves, a hat, long sleeve shirt, long pants, and closed shoes.

For inside treatment you can use CB-80.  Apply this product any place you are seeing activity.  You can use it around windows, doors, baseboards, and cracks and crevices.

Finally, you can use D-Fense dust to treat under all baseboards, in openings around pipes under the sinks, and in the wall voids.  To treat inside the wall voids, remove the outlet covers and apply the dust between the drywall and the electrical boxes.  You should also apply a little dust on the bottom of the outlet box.  The dust can be applied with a handheld duster.  Only apply the dust in areas where it cannot be disturbed by people, pets, or air currents.
