How to Trench for Subterranean Termites

Q.  I am trenching around my house, but I have a wooden deck.  How do I go about treating that?

A.  The best way to treat a wood deck for subterranean termites is to go under it and trench right up against the house.  You also want to trench around any piers that are holding up the deck, and you should trench around the stairs.  Oftentimes, this is not possible because the deck is too close to the ground.  In that situation, the best you can do is to trench right around the deck.  Keep in mind though that subterranean termites always colonize in the ground.  If there is dirt under the deck, it is possible for the termites to establish a colony under there.  This is why it's always best if you can trench right up against the house.
